"Sometimes Life's Not Fair"

Today we were working on various little projects in the room and one of the children started complaining that such and such was "not fair". My little friend Tristan, whose daily stories of pistol shooting grannies and cigar smoking spies, keeps me laughing, turned around and with more seriousness than a cat stalking a bird says "Life is not always fair."

I sat there a little stunned for a second. Here was a five year old speaking profound words of wisdom that many an adult would do well to take heed of. A mom that was volunteering in our class asked him where he learned that from and without blinking an eye he said "My mom." Tristan's mom is teaching her son lessons that far surpass anything he'll ever learn from me.

You see, life is not always fair. We can't all be the best, most beautiful, funniest, etc. We can't all have everything we want all the time or even some of the time. Some days we get the pink crayon and some days we've gotta settle for the blue one. Some days we twist that glue stick and the top pops right off. There are days we get lucky and get to play in the play dough center before it fills up. On a really good day we get a Capri Sun, Cheez-Its AND grapes, some days it's a water bottle and a banana.

While these thoughts are all "preschool" things it wouldn't hurt us grown-ups to take them to heart. Like Tristan said "Sometimes life's not fair." You get what you get and you don't pitch a fit!
